Okay, so we’ve covered the first five Golden Rules in Part One of this blog series, if you missed it, you may want to start there. From setting expectations to not allowing yourself to go it alone, there are some majorly useful rules to live by that will help you lead a connected classroom and teach with tech!
Without further ado, let’s uncover the final five golden rules for teaching with tech:
Teach in Segments
Break up your lesson plans into different segments that will help to increase engagement from your students and streamline your lesson strategy.
Start with a lecture or explaining a topic. Then, move on to an interactive discussion, have questions to prompt students to get involved. After a little discussion, set some time for quiet reflection and give students a worksheet or questions to answer on their own.
Let students know that this is the way each class will be run, set those expectations up front so they’re prepared. From there, classes will be easier to manage for you as well with a clear structure!
Keep it Simple
For most teachers, teaching with tech is a totally new concept, especially at grade school levels. So, don’t overcomplicate your setup. You’re not filming a Hollywood movie; you’re providing valuable education to students who need it. Start with a computer and a webcam on a tripod, then if that doesn’t work add a different component to level up your setup. But the most important thing is that you really don’t need a fancy tech setup to be an effective teacher – we promise! We’ll have some tech tips for you soon too…
Be Aware of Your Strengths
Just because you may not be super confident on camera, doesn’t mean that your confidence as a teacher should be affected. Be aware of your strengths and capitalize upon those to create an engaging lesson. If you know you’re a hand talker and you use a lot of gestures to explain things to students in a different way, make sure that your camera is set up in a way that the students from home can see you! Use your strengths to your advantage, set up your tech accordingly, and be your best self and your students will benefit.
Use Teaching & Engagement Software
If you’re teaching in a virtual environment, why not engage the help of special software tools! There are so many useful tools that add fun components to class like gamification and trivia that get students involved regardless of location!
Ask Yourself 4 Questions…
It’s the last rule, so we had to give you a little bit of a bonus. While all these rules are important, start every class by asking yourself these four questions and we know that you will see major engagement and learning success:
- Where do my students see me?
- How can my students hear me?
- Where do I see my students?
- How do I hear my students?
